The lemon trees and sawtoothed shoreline dotted with green islands of Kyushu are all gifts from the island's volcanic landforms, which also provide the island's springtime warmth. Despite its attractive scenery and easygoing vibe, the island is frequently disregarded by tourists from other countries. A new bullet train that cuts the time between Fukuoka and Nagasaki, two of the island's biggest towns, to only 80 minutes caught my eye on a recent journey from my residence in Kyoto, not long after Japan started opening up to foreign visitors.
