Unlike traditional state highway departments, the OTA receives no tax dollars. Instead, it operates entirely as a self-sustaining entity funded through user-paid tolls and revenue bonds. Starting with the historic Turner Turnpike connecting Oklahoma City and Tulsa in 1953, the system now spans over 600 miles of high-speed expressways. Today, the OTA utilizes modern electronic toll collection systems like Pikepass and PlatePay to ensure efficient regional transit.
